Vintage Hopi Sterling Silver Overlay Storytelling Medallion Necklace. An exceptional vintage sterling silver overlay necklace dating to the early 1970s, this museum-quality work exemplifies the refined artistry and profound symbolism long associated with the finest traditions of Hopi silversmithing. Measuring about 25 inches in length and weighing a substantial 101.5 grams, the necklace is composed of hand-fabricated oxidized sterling silver beads culminating in nine graduated overlay medallions, the largest measuring approximately 45mm in diameter. The reverse bears a pictorial hallmark above the stamp STERLING, appearing consistent with production for the Mark Lindsay Shop, a respected Southwestern gallery recognized for presenting exceptional Native American jewelry by accomplished Indigenous silversmiths.
Far more than decorative ornament, the necklace presents a harmonious visual narrative rooted in Pueblo cosmology and the enduring relationship between humanity, the natural world, and the agricultural cycle. The central medallion is divided into four balanced quadrants, each depicting a stylized Kokopelli figure-the revered flute player traditionally associated with fertility, abundance, music, and the renewal of life. Arranged in a fourfold composition, the figures evoke the four cardinal directions and the cyclical progression of the seasons, expressing the continuous rhythm of time and renewal. Surrounding the centerpiece are eight beautifully executed overlay medallions incorporating stylized cloud terraces, rain, flowing water, lightning, mesas, and other elemental motifs that symbolize life-giving moisture and the successful cultivation of corn, the spiritual and cultural foundation of Pueblo peoples throughout the Southwest.
Executed with exceptional precision, crisp overlay, rich oxidation, and elegant symmetry, this substantial necklace is both a wearable work of art and a compelling expression of Southwestern Indigenous artistry. Its sculptural presence, sophisticated iconography, and outstanding craftsmanship make it an important addition to any discerning collection of Native American jewelry or Southwestern decorative arts.
